1966 Marshall "Super Amp", aka the 45/100, this is the same model of 100 Marshall that Jimi Hendrix used at Monterey and during the first year of his career.

Ok, all superlatives aside this is some classic 100 watt tone in a box right here: "Wheels of Fire", early Hendrix, Free... no problem.  If you want those tones, plug in the right guitar and bring your chops, the amp will take you to that exact place.  According to Roe's excellent info site on vintage 100 watt Marshalls, this is series 3b amp made in later '66 thru the first couple months of '67.  Some good reading here: http://folk.ntnu.no/roef/JTM100.html

The Good news:  The amp's been gone thru and bulletproofed by a pro tech, it's ready to go and serves up tone like nothing you've ever heard.  The tubes are new but one of the Gold Lions went south when I was biasing the amp last night.  A new set of Valve Arts KT66 will be installed and shipped with the amp.  I would suggest finding a nice vintage quad of either GEC/Genelex KT66' or running some GE 7581's... the amp will sound the best and be more reliable with the older tubes; new production tubes are, well... they're terrible from a standpoint of quality.

The amp's B+ runs a little north of 600 volts if you plug it into the wall.  Yup, you read that right... over 600 volts.  The power transformer, a Drake 1204-43, for these amps runs the B+ on European current right around 490 volts DC.  There is a fault in these transformers though and running on American voltages and current the amp's B+ jumps up to the high 500's; some of these things (this one included) run over 600 volts.  Ok, what does that mean?  It means these amps are incredibly hard on tubes if you use them without a VariAC to back the AC voltage down.  If you plug this thing into the wall, with new production tubes, the tubes will last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.  If you run vintage GEC KT66's, the tubes will last longer, but nowhere near their intended life span and you'll be spend a LOT of money on tubes.  So, you've been warned:  you really, I mean REALLY should use this amp with a VariAC.  Running the AC somewhere around 100 to 110 volts, you still have around 500 volts on the plates of the tubes, the amps is still loud enough to cause police visits, tick off the most distant of neighbors, infuriate sound men and, ...put a big smile on your face.

The output transformer's been changed.  It's been replaced with a Merren Audio clone of the original 1202-84 Drake, the power transformer is the original Drake 1204-43 with the 3 inch stack of iron.  If you check the Marshall Archives for JTM45/100's you'll notice quite a few of the amps pictured have replaced output transformers.  I've heard original versions of this amp and the Merren output transformer sounds better, hands down.  Chris Merren's work is absolutely without equal in terms of recreating the old tones.  The tolex on part of the cab has been added, I say "added" because when I got the amp it only had the original tolex on the front of the amp, the top, bottom and sides were bare wood.  Here's the Marshall Archives site to check out some other 45/100's, check out serial number 7026, that was Jimi's amp. http://www.amparchives.com/album/Marshall/100%20Watt%20Series%201965-1981/1959%20JTM%2045%20100W/index.html
